News from the Pond 5th Grade April Newsletter

Those Elephants are So Pretty By: Aaron Schmeiser

The fifth grade students drew some elephants for the culture fair.  We drew them and designed them.  First, we went on the internet and Ms. Jochimsen found a how-to draw an elephant website.  Then, we got to design the elephant.   Last of all, we got to design the border.  Matthew Kunze enjoyed drawing the elephants.  If you come to the cultural air you will see them too.

Graphing India’s Sites By: Ashley Streveler

The 5th grade class is working on making graphs about India.  We are making the graphs because they are for the Culture Fair on the 20th of May.  The first thing we did was research our topic on India in the computer lab.  Then, we made our graphs on the computer or by hand.  Finally, we will post our graphs in the hallway upstairs.  Alex Schmitt said his topic was comparing each of the Himalayan Mountains to each other.  I think India is a very interesting country.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle By: Katerina Kolzow

On April 26th, the fifth grade class used up some old CDs to make sun catchers.  Why, you might ask?  Because we wanted to help the Earth clean up!  To get started, we each picked two CDs and drew designs on them.  Then, Ms. Jochimsen glued them together.  Next, Ms. Jochimsen took a bent paperclip, made it really hot, and applied it to the CDs to make a hole.  Finally, Ms. Jochimsen put string through the hole to hang up.  Aaron Schmeiser said, “Picking out the colors to put on the CDs was the best part,” and mine was drawing the designs.

India Has Casts? By: Isabelle Feiten

We, the fifth grade class watched an India movie. The movie taught us that Indians have casts. There is a higher canst and a lower cast. The lowest cast is called the “untouchables.” This happened because on emperor decided he wanted casts. The “Untouchables” didn’t have the same rights, but now there is a law saying everyone has the same rights as others. The “Untouchables” usually don’t hang out, or play with higher cast people.

Tornado! Just Kidding!By: Jadyn Goodwin

On April 19, 2012 the school had a tornado drill that let us practice what we would do if there was a real tornado.  First through fifth graders go in the boys’ bathroom, and the sixth through eighth graders go in the girls’ bathroom.  This is how you do a tornado drill. First, you go to your meeting place.  Next, you get down and cover your head.  Finally, you stay there until your teacher says it’s okay to get up.  Isabelle Feiten said, “I think the worst part is that everyone was talking.”

There as Tall as the Sky! By: Sierra Johnson

For English we made a tall tale story and character.  Our class went down to the computer lab.  First, we went on readwritethink.org.  Then, we made conflict, character, solution, and stetting charts.  Then, we did timelines. Next, we made our stories.  I asked Katerina whose story she thought was the most wonderful. She said, “I liked Matthew Roth’s the best because it was funny.” I think all the stories were great and wonderful!

The War Begins! By: Garrett Weber

The fifth grade class is making a Civil War project. We did this to learn about the Civil War. The fifth grade started at the beginning of April. First, we looked up facts on the internet. Then, we took notes. Finally, we made a power point. The most stuff we did was in the computer lab. We named it “The ABC’s of the Civil War.” It was very fun. Logan Hawkey said his favorite part was, “learning about the Civil War!”

Science with IceBy: Kristina Hull

For science the fifth grade class did an experiment. First, Miss Jochimsen put ice in a cup with a little water.  Next, Miss Jochimsen turned on a lamp. The lamp didn’t work at first but then she got it to work. Finally, we checked the temperature every three minutes. Well, the ice was melting and the temperature stayed at 25 degrees F. Then, when the all ice melted it went up by ten degrees. I thought that the project was fun.

Rangoli for India By: Alex Schmitt

On April 19, 2012, during art class we made Rangoli artwork.  It was for the Culture Fair and we have India.  These are the steps.  First, we picked out two patterns we wanted.  Then, we colored them in with colored pencils, crayons, or markers.  Last, we wrote our name in the corner of the paper.  Sierra says, “I liked coloring them in the best.”

Physical Education By: Matthew Roth

The fifth and sixth graders played basketball in the gym.   We played this from 1:00- 1:45 on Wednesday April 25, 2012.  We did this because we had a lesson in basketball for Physical Education.  Mr. Nowak picked captains. The team I was on won.  Garrett Weber says it was fun that we won the game.

Math Tests are Fun! By: Matthew Kunze

The class knew it was coming.  It was a math test.  We got our tests, folders and pencils, and got started. It was on Tuesday, April 24, 2012, and was in our classroom.  We did this test so we could get a grade in the grade book.  Garrett said the easiest part of the test was the finding the data for the graphs.  Everyone did good. I think it was an easier test. I like math.

Mass at the Nursing HomeBy: Garrett Weiler

On Wednesday, 17, grades 4 and 5 went to the Golden Living Center in Colby.  It is a place where people go when they are sick or elderly and can’t take care of themself.  We went there because Father Hackel wanted to do mass.  Logan and I got to be servers. Ashley, Jadyn, and Noah got to do readings.

How to Have Fun By: Logan Hawkey

Through the month of April, the 5th graders made movies. The movies were about how to play on the playground. We made the movies on the playground. We made the movies to show 1st-4th graders how to be safe and have fun on the playground. We made scripts and practiced them outside, so when we were ready Ms. Jochimsen recorded us. We had the 1st-4th graders come and watch the videos we made. The movies were how to play safe and have fun on the swings, slide, basketball court, and football field.

NOTES TO PARENTS

Reading Auction

At the beginning of June we will hold our classroom reading auction. Students will be able to bid on items using the pages they have read over the year. For each one page they have read they will have earned $1. There will be a limit of one item per student, until all students have bought a prize. Then, they may bid on other items if they have left over money/pages. I have a good collection of items already, but if you have any gently used items that you don’t want/need any more at home, and you wish to donate them to put on the reading auction, I would welcome them. Examples: books, toys, cds, or other kid friendly items. Just send them to school with your child. Thank you!

Culture Fair

Please come to our school culture fair on Sunday, May 20th from 1-3 PM.

Each classroom will have displays portraying various countries. We are studying India for our culture and have learned many fascinating things so far! Here are some things you can help us with to get our classroom ready.

Decorations: Indians decorate with bright colors and gold. If you have anything you think would be suitable, you can send it/bring it to school. For example, I will have gold tables, gold placemats, and gold lamps. I will hang bright colored fabric.  For our jungle/animal area, if you have stuffed monkeys, snakes, cows, or anything peacock.  I already have elephants and tigers.

Clothing: If your child wants to dress up, (which I strongly encourage!) here are some ideas of what they can wear. Boys can wear button down shirts or tunic style shirts. White shirts are an option. Some men wear turbans on their head. Girls can wear tunic styled shirts with pants or leggings, bright scarves, gold jewelry, big dangly earrings, bangle bracelets, flat shoes, flip flops or sandals. If you want to research saris, large scarves, these are also worn by women. *Many shirts that are styled for the 70’s have the right kind of look for boys and girls. Paisley, swirls, arches, and circular designs are common. Gold, bright colors, embroidery, and beading are common.
